What are custom fields?

Custom Fields can be used to allow community members to post additional information when posting Ideas. In other words, you can collect additional fields upon idea submission and user sign-up. This additional information is separate from the actual idea/topic.

What are the custom fields that are available?

Custom fields can be added to either the new idea submission form, or to the user registration form. The types of custom fields available vary between the two forms:

New Idea Form

  • Single Line Text Box
  • Large Text/Description
  • US Zip Code
  • US Zip Code + Congressional District
  • Checkbox
  • URL/Hyperlink
  • YouTube Video
  • Screenr Video
  • Multiple Choice

New User Registration Form

  • Single Line Text box
  • Large Text Description
  • US Zip Code
  • US Zip Code + Congressional District
  • Multiple Choice
  • Checkbox

Where is the Custom Field available on the IdeaScale Portal?

Custom fields will be available on both the new idea screen and also on the user registration screen, depending on how its configured. When portal users/members post new ideas or upon registration, they can enter in information for the Custom Field.

Can the data for the custom fields be exported?

Yes - data is now included as part of the Excel idea export. See here for more information on exporting IdeaScale data:

Can the data for custom fields be revised/edited?

Yes. When a user edits their profile, they'll have the option to change the the values. If its the user's own idea, they'll have the option to edit their own idea and change the values of the custom fields. In addition, moderators can also edit these fields as well when they edit an idea.

Can custom fields be hidden from community members (only viewable by moderators?

Yes. When creating a custom field, click the checkbox titled, "Moderator Field". Once checked, the field will only be viewable by the moderators of your community.

Can custom fields added to profile data be hidden from public view?

Yes. Certain types of data are meant to be private (ie, age, sex, address, etc). When you add a custom field to a users profile, you'll have the option to hide the field from public view by clicking the "Private/Hidden Field" checkbox.
